Media release – Tech Council welcomes opening of Critical Technologies Challenges Program

CANBERRA 22 May 2024 – The Tech Council of Australia (TCA) welcomes the Federal Government’s launch of the Critical Technologies Challenges Program, which will initially focus on the potential of quantum technologies to solve significant national challenges. This is another important step forward in delivering of the National Quantum Strategy.

Quantum technology is an area where Australia punches above its weight. According to TCA research, Australia has the right foundations for a globally successful quantum industry – we are already home to more than 3% of global quantum start-ups and are attracting 3.6% of global venture capital investment, well above our 1.6% share of global GDP.

Responding to the Government’s announcement, Acting CEO Ryan Black said, “The Tech Council of Australia, home to the Australian Quantum Alliance (AQA), welcomes the launch of the Critical Technologies Challenges Programto demonstrate the importance of today’s quantum technologies to solving complex national challenges.”

“Further investment is essential to maintaining Australia’s leadership in the race to commercialising quantum technologies, which could deliver billions of dollars in economic value and thousands of jobs for Australians by 2030, while supporting our strategic and national security objectives.”

“Australia’s lead in quantum technology development is the result of strong government investment and support for decades. We look forward to continuing work with the Minister for Industry and Science, the Hon Ed Husic MP, on the implementation of the National Quantum Strategy and further investment in Australia’s quantum capabilities,” Mr Black said.
