Tech Council response to the Prime Minister’s AI speech
15 July 2026
The Prime Minister recognised the economic and strategic opportunity AI presents for Australia, and made clear that Australia should develop and adopt AI here in our national interest.
The Tech Council supports the Prime Minister’s vision. Developing and adopting AI in Australia will attract investment, create new and fulfilling jobs, lift productivity, improve quality of life, and strengthen Australia’s long-term resilience and security.
The Office of AI in the Prime Minister’s Department should coordinate Australia’s approach in the national interest and lead a clear and consultative process to develop the framework and standards. We look forward to supporting that work.
Australia is competing globally for the investment and infrastructure that will shape how AI is developed and governed. Companies choose where to invest based on the cost and ease of doing business, approvals processes and regulatory certainty. The Prime Minister recognised the importance of Australia’s competitiveness in attracting investment and participating in global AI development.
Australia already has effective laws and expert regulators governing AI. The national framework and standards should build on that system and provide a clear, cohesive approach to AI governance. Industry looks forward to helping develop governance that keeps pace with the technology.
Lucinda Longcroft, the Tech Council’s Director of Policy and Government Affairs said:
“AI must create opportunities for all Australians. Public trust will be critical, and the tech sector has a responsibility to ensure AI is developed and used responsibly in Australia’s national interest.
We will consult members on today’s announcement and continue working with the government as the framework is developed.”
